Civic reception for Jets

THE victorious Nowra Bomaderry Jets Group 7 Rugby League premiers will be officially honoured by Shoalhaven City Council.

Mayor Joanna Gash said a special celebration reception for the club’s first ever Group 7 premiership win will be held on Friday, October 10.

Players and coaching staff will be council’s special guest at a function that will also include members of the Shoalhaven Sports Board.

“It was an exceptional win that deserves recognition,” Cr Gash said.

“Congratulations to the Nowra-Bomaderry Jets on taking out their inaugural Group 7 premiership an achievement made all the more remarkable by the fact that the team was languishing at the bottom of the table five rounds in following a shaky start to the season.

“This victory is testament to the commitment and ‘never say die’ attitude of the players, coaching staff and officials.

“It is fantastic to see a sporting team bring so much pride and excitement to the local community.”

Former Shoalhaven Mayor Paul Green and Kiama MP Gareth Ward were excited spectators at the grand final, with Mr Ward describing the win as being “great for the community”.

“Right from kick-off, the Jets commanded the field from possession of the ball to their masterly manoeuvres – I haven’t seen so many flick passes since question time,” he joked.

“My hearty congratulations to the Jets but I pay particular tribute to Ben Wellington for his outstanding leadership of the Jets through what has been an amazing season.

“He should be proud of his leadership of a great team which has now written itself into the history books.”

He also congratulated Ryan James who was the man-of-the-match.

“The residents of Nowra-Bomaderry (of which I am one) can be very proud of the Jets and I look forward to seeing the team return to winning form next season,” Mr Ward said.

South Coast MP and NSW Speaker Shelley Hancock said the news of the Nowra Bomaderry Jets Group 7 victory “truly made her weekend”.

“Their first ever premiership win has made us all proud,” she said.

“As I was travelling the South Coast from function to function, I was being updated on the score.

“I congratulate each of the players, their coaches and their families for their ongoing commitment and dedication.”
