AS Bendigo’s population continues to boom, not bust, then battles over developments such as that planned for Curtin Street in Flora Hill are likely to grow.
The urban sprawl is happening in many areas across the City of Greater Bendigo.
Plans for 15 dwellings in Curtin Street had already drawn 87 objections and were unaminously opposed by council.
Now the fight has gone before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
It could be a drawn-out process as VCAT has called for revised draft conditions from council and the developer.
What this saga shows is that plans for higher density living, whether it be Flora Hill, Eaglehawk, Quarry Hill, Strathdale, Maiden Gully, Strathfieldsayeor any other suburb across Bendigo could spark vehement opposition.
As the city continues to grow there will be greater pressure on council in terms of infrastructure, not just housing, but transport, shopping precincts and much more.
These are challenging times for City of Greater Bendigo’s council and staff, as well as those who make the decisions at VCAT.
There’s a lot of stake.
