Recent decisions shock ratepayers

THREE indefensible decisions made recently by Council, baffle ratepayers in these tougheconomic times.

Despite some 30 plus submissions to the Council’s Draft Budget 2014/15 proposals

Firstly, mostly suggesting lower than six per cent rate increases, City of Greater Bendigo Councillors voted on Wednesday, July 30, for the plus six per cent rate hikes, five in favour and three sensible councillors against.

Since the rate notices were dispatched, there has not been one person who has put their hand up and congratulated council for raising their rates!

One wonders why?

We have now been confronted by a $28,500 approximately state of the art s-bend seat in the defunct $8 million cost over-run Hargreaves Mall that sent so many traders to the wall.

The seat was selected in-house by council officers.

Then to add insult to injury the Mayor and Chief Executive Officer head on a junket to China to woo another Chinese city – Haimen.

I say once bitten twice shy of a sister city relationship with a Chinese city.

The former sister city did very little and who is to say this one won’t be the same?

Indirect costs associated with this junket go to the real core of what this council simply does not financially understand in tough times.

One cannot justify the raising of rates when idiotic financial decisions are made on the expense-side of a council’s budget and attempted to be justified by raising rates by plus six per cent overall.

In Ned Kelly’s day it would be looked upon as highway robbery!

Unless financially responsible decision-making is made going forward by this council, it’s councillors as a majority and its officers the wrath of the ratepayers will prevail at the October 2016 elections.
